Timber Decking

Decking & Garden Make Over

Now this garden and decking project, was one to remember when it comes to rainforest’s, needless to say there were several over grown bushes and trees blocking out the sun. When we arrived the thought was were to start..? and how to give the family their garden back?

We love a challenge and this was a really good one to get our teeth into.

How We Started

We started by clearing all the bushes from the area to make a little space for us to work, we did this with a small digger, which saves time and money in the long run. After this we cut back and downed a few of the large trees that blocked the light in garden.

Now time to get on with the fence, first we jet washed to get rid of green moss. Then we started to repair the sections that had rotted away. After we finished all repairs to the fence we then painted it all, so the fence now all looked the same.

After the fence was repaired we started on the decking, which was just an after thought from the customer, but looks great and gives more to the look of the garden. We also took this time to add nice slated area to side of the decking were a fire pit was to go.

We then concentrated on installing a soft play area at the rear of the garden for the Son to enjoy with his friends. The area for soft play was built with geo grid which stabilised the ground before the weed membrane was installed. After this 8 sacks of soft wood chipping’s, was poured over the weed control to give their Son’s area that play ground feel.

Next came quality real grass turf 120 square meters of it and this sets off the green in the garden. The last thing was a small stone path which would allow the family access from the decking to the rear of the garden without the need to step on the grass.

Project Goals

The goal of this project was easy and was to give the family their garden back, without the need to spend a fortune on doing so. I really hope they carry on the momentum and start planting and watch the garden grow over time into mature area to enjoy for years to come.

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic Turfing job, which I think is one of the best looking low maintenance gardens we did in 2016. After installing the families small corner deck, we were asked to lay the synthetic turf lawn for the customer.

Might I say that these types of garden makeovers are great if looking for the easy garden option with little care needed to keep the lawn green for years to come.

Where The Idea Came From

The idea for this garden were totally that of the owner and customer Kim, who was quite picky on what she wanted from her garden. We settled on the design for the decking and sleeper beds, which we completed in two days before moving on to the turfing.

While this is easy to care for, it is the way that you lay the grass that really matters, as this sets the stage for how it will look for years to come. You cannot just lay this on top of the old grass, it has to be laid in the right manner.

The Steps We Took

First you must strip back the old garden sod or grass and make the area deep enough to take 75-100mm of small crusher run stone for solid base. After this has been totally compacted you then need to install weed membrane, so that weeds will not come through nice new synthetic lawn.

After which in goes the sand which makes it softer to walk on while give perfectly flat base, the lawn will sit on. you also need to installed grips around the edge which can be either steel or treated timber in this case treated timber.

When all these steps are completed, you should lay out the grass and get into potion, to glue the edges together with super strong glue this takes a bit of experience which we have. After everything is said and done the customer was very happy with the outcome and so are we.

Small Patio

Patios

Small Patio done with old slabs that were just laying around.

We had replaced this customers fence, so were asked if we could use these old stone slabs to lay patio, which would save a lot of money in materials needed. I had to think what size could be built and were would it go…?

In the end we settled for the top of the garden, with just enough to fill area between two sides of fence.

How we Laid Patio

First of all we dug out all the old rubble and material from the area were the patio was to be laid. After we moved all material, we then laid weed membrane to stop any further weeds coming through in future. Then we laid 120mm of hardcore to stabilise the ground and mixed up a batch of 4 sharp sand & 1 cement to lay slabs onto.

This really works well in setting the stone in. At the end on day 2 we came back and mixed a good strong mortar to fill between slabs, this really makes them solid and will last the test of time.

Project Goals

The goal here was easy in what we wanted to achieve, which was a nice seating area. A project which was created from material that other wise would have been put in skip and that being said i think it turned out cracking. This is why we picked this job to be in our projects feature and it was nice day to be working outside.

Customer Review

We had One Property Maintenance out to erect a new fence. So we also had them lay a lovely patio as the fence turned out brilliant. They saved us a lot of money by using the old stone slabs we had in our garden great another 5 star from us. Thank you

Bespoke Joinery

Bespoke Joinery

This hot tub is one of my favourite joinery builds from last year, the reason being it was fun and unique. I had never done one of these before so Allan who is a master joiner and excellent in every aspect of joinery led the way.

What was really enjoyable is that it was total free hand joinery with no plans to speak of, just the tools and the hot tub. The customer explained what they were looking for and that was it.

 How It Was Built

The materials we used for the framing was 2×2 framing and decking boards for the side’s and lid, also we used some dressed 4×2 for the lid holding frame. We started with taking measurements from the tub and got on with cutting the timber to frame the tub.

Once we had the frame built we cut the decking boards for the sides of the frame and designed the layout of the boards around the edging. As the hot tub was going to be removed from the wooden shell in the winter months, we created a removable side and in doing so found another really great use for the structure.

If the hot tub is removed the area space inside the frame can now be used as a bar area or barbecue food serving station. The hight was perfect for this type of use and why not get two benefits for the price of one, happy days.

How It Looks

The end result is very impressive for the actual cost involved in purchasing the hot tub and building the frame. It was finished with a couple of coats of clear coat wood preserver and rope handles so that the lidd can be removed easily by 2 people.

If you keep in mind that these hot tubs can be purchased second hand for half the price than when new it makes it even more attractive
