Emergency Fence Installation

Fencing

This was emergency call from a customer not to far from were i live. They had been recommended a man who claimed to be able to erect their fence no problem, this is what they had been told.

This is how that unfolded he turned up for the job after he had received half payment upfront as a deposit. He took down the old fence leaving the whole garden open to a cut, that passed the side of the home, so that any body could access garden without hassle.

He then tried to install concrete posts 6 inches into the ground yes thats right 6 inches ..? the recommended depth is 2 feet. No corner posts were used and it was complete shambles.

Where I Came Into The Job

I received a call on the second day or should i say night. I was asked to come and take a look as the customer did not want him to carry on with the rest of the job. The customer had lost total faith in his abilities by this time.

As i checked out the cowboys work and thats all it can be compared with, is a cowboy attempt at fencing. I advised the family to call him and ask for their money back, at which he replied i will be out of pocket..?

I will give you bit of advise, if somebody tells you that they can do something, but in the end they cannot, then you should not be out of pocket one penny. They should refund you every cent.

End Result

In the end i took down the mess he left and replaced with a solid 6ft close board fence. Built from top quality tantalised timber which will keep the garden secure.

Moral of the story is just because one person recommends another, does not mean they are good at what they do. So please check out a few reviews and references before you commit.

This is a 5* rating for a 5* service. Craig came to our house at 8pm on a Friday evening after what could only be described as a cowboy had spent 2 days attempting to erect a fence and failed miserably! We were left with half a fence, our garden exposed to the cut that we live on and 2 dogs that had to be on leads to go for a wee in their own back yard. Craig gave us sound advice and a quote and started work within a few days. We now have a fantastic new fence made out of excellent quality wood to an extremely high standard. We really appreciated Craig’s common sense approach and excellent work ethic and we would not hesitate to recommend One Property Maintenance to family and friends or anybody that wants a really good job doing for a fair price.

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic Turf

Synthetic Turfing job, which I think is one of the best looking low maintenance gardens we did in 2016. After installing the families small corner deck, we were asked to lay the synthetic turf lawn for the customer.

Might I say that these types of garden makeovers are great if looking for the easy garden option with little care needed to keep the lawn green for years to come.

Where The Idea Came From

The idea for this garden were totally that of the owner and customer Kim, who was quite picky on what she wanted from her garden. We settled on the design for the decking and sleeper beds, which we completed in two days before moving on to the turfing.

While this is easy to care for, it is the way that you lay the grass that really matters, as this sets the stage for how it will look for years to come. You cannot just lay this on top of the old grass, it has to be laid in the right manner.

The Steps We Took

First you must strip back the old garden sod or grass and make the area deep enough to take 75-100mm of small crusher run stone for solid base. After this has been totally compacted you then need to install weed membrane, so that weeds will not come through nice new synthetic lawn.

After which in goes the sand which makes it softer to walk on while give perfectly flat base, the lawn will sit on. you also need to installed grips around the edge which can be either steel or treated timber in this case treated timber.

When all these steps are completed, you should lay out the grass and get into potion, to glue the edges together with super strong glue this takes a bit of experience which we have. After everything is said and done the customer was very happy with the outcome and so are we.

Project Challenges

Erecting 20 meters of fence in 2 days of none stop work. As far as fences go this one was pretty straight forward, the same old story rip down the old fence and install new.

The only difference between this and other fencing projects, is the fact that next door had built his garden up 2 feet against the old fence. That was the challenge we faced, how not to have next doors garden touch the new fence…?

How We Solved Them

We solved this with placing slabs between the garden and new fence stabilising the earth, while also stopping it touch the new fence. This is not the ideal situation to erect a new fence but we managed it with a little fuss.

The fenced area now looks great and the customer is over the moon with there new fenced garden. David is also fit and healthy again, he will be back at work soon to help build all the new fencing orders we have.

Bespoke Joinery

Bespoke Joinery

This hot tub is one of my favourite joinery builds from last year, the reason being it was fun and unique. I had never done one of these before so Allan who is a master joiner and excellent in every aspect of joinery led the way.

What was really enjoyable is that it was total free hand joinery with no plans to speak of, just the tools and the hot tub. The customer explained what they were looking for and that was it.

 How It Was Built

The materials we used for the framing was 2×2 framing and decking boards for the side’s and lid, also we used some dressed 4×2 for the lid holding frame. We started with taking measurements from the tub and got on with cutting the timber to frame the tub.

Once we had the frame built we cut the decking boards for the sides of the frame and designed the layout of the boards around the edging. As the hot tub was going to be removed from the wooden shell in the winter months, we created a removable side and in doing so found another really great use for the structure.

If the hot tub is removed the area space inside the frame can now be used as a bar area or barbecue food serving station. The hight was perfect for this type of use and why not get two benefits for the price of one, happy days.

How It Looks

The end result is very impressive for the actual cost involved in purchasing the hot tub and building the frame. It was finished with a couple of coats of clear coat wood preserver and rope handles so that the lidd can be removed easily by 2 people.

If you keep in mind that these hot tubs can be purchased second hand for half the price than when new it makes it even more attractive
